IV drips are used extensively and are considered to be a very safe treatment. That being said, as with any medical treatment, there is always a small risk of complications, which is why attending a doctor-led clinic is vital.

A doctor-led clinic will be medically trained to support you on the rare chance that anything unexpected occurs, giving you peace of mind. As a longevity and functional medicine clinic we like to gather as much information about your current health as we can. This is why we offer a consultation with our IV clinician prior to any treatment, as standard. This ensures your IV therapy is suitable for you and optimally tailored to your individual needs for maximum therapeutic benefit.

Infection at IV site

Needle insertion compromises the skin’s natural barrier, creating a potential entry point for infection. If you experience any pain or redness at the site of the needle you should let us know immediately by contacting the clinic.

Bruising + swelling

Bruising and swelling are a reasonably common side effect of IV drips. This can occur when the needle breaking the skin causes a small amount of trauma to the surrounding tissue. Bruising and swelling is temporary and will usually go away a few days after your IV drip.

Allergic reactions

It is possible to have an allergic reaction to the tape used to secure the cannula or ingredients in the IV drip, even if you haven’t had a reaction before. An allergic reaction can lead to anaphylaxis, which requires immediate medical attention. Although dangerous, a reaction like this is very rare, but highlights just how important it is to attend a doctor-led clinic for safety.

If you begin to feel unwell in any way once you’ve left the clinic you should call us right away. If we are closed, you are not at home, and/or you suddenly feel very unwell, you should call 999.

Are IV drips safe?

When carried out at a doctor-led clinic, IV drips are considered to be very safe. However, if you have any concerns, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with your questions. Our patient care team is happy to answer any queries you may have.
