Skin rejuvenation combines all the benefits of microneedling + radio frequency into one incredibly effective, non-surgical treatment.

We provide skin rejuvenation, otherwise known as radio frequency (RF) microneedling, in London at our St Paul’s clinic.

  • Targets deeper layers of skin
  • Safer alternative to lasers
  • Long-lasting results
  • Minimal downtime

This is the ultimate treatment for slowing down ageing, improving the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and increasing plumpness to help you feel your very best. It is particularly beneficial for acne scarring. Plus, it can be used around the delicate eye area, décolletage, hands and any other body part you wish to treat.

The science bit – how does skin rejuvenation work?

Using RF Aesthetics ‘Secret’ technology, gold coated microneedles pierce the skin and deliver precisely controlled bipolar RF energy beneath the epidermis.

The trauma caused beneath the skin stimulates a healing response from the body. This response encourages collagen and elastin formation. Blood flow is also stimulated which increases oxygenation as a result of the healing process. This has the added benefit of removing toxins and bringing more of the good inflammatory components to the skin. As a result, you will see a tightening and plumping effect – which actually improves with time!

Microneedles penetrate the surface of the skin

Bipolar RF energy is directly emitted under the skin

This stimulates collagen regeneration and elastin production

The principles of RF microneedling

Dr Harpal Bains says…

“This is a much sought-after treatment that delivers truly exceptional results and has recently really gained popularity with brands such as Morpheus8 getting a lot of media attention. We have been using this technology for over 9 years now and have gained a real insight into what it can do and what we can do for your skin. We combine microneedling with radio frequency – a form of energy that gets converted into heat energy fired into the deeper layers of the skin. We prefer radio frequency due to the much lower risk of complications than those associated with light-based treatments like IPL and lasers (IPL and laser complication risks include burning, pigmentation, and damage from sun exposure).

“Radio frequency not only causes less damage to the surface of the skin but maintains the skin’s integrity with minimal downtime. With RF microneedling, we can be very precise because we can control the depth of the microneedles to target the upper, middle and deeper layers of skin to treat different areas and skin conditions and support the skin at a deeper level. This is where you really benefit from having this treatment in a clinic with someone with expertise – microneedling at home just isn’t as effective although it is still very good. I tend to tell my patients not to expect dramatic results right away. Skin rejuvenation is a ‘slow-burn’ treatment. After the procedure you will likely feel you’re only seeing moderate results. But then, five years down the line you will really notice the difference when you compare your skin to friends’ who’ve not had similar treatments.”

Fractional lasers vs. radio frequency microneedling

Fractional lasers

Fractional lasers penetrate the skin causing an inverse triangle of damage to the epidermis. The deeper the target area the more extensive the damage. This results in longer recovery times, more damage to the surface of the skin and hence, more pain.

vs.

RF microneedling

The RF Aesthetics ‘Secret’ delivers precisely controlled RF energy only to the target areas, adjusting the depth selectively with minimally invasive micro-needles. This means minimal damage (pin prick) to the surface of the skin, shorter treatment times and less pain, with faster recovery time

Is RF microneedling better than microneedling?
Microneedling is an effective treatment in itself, but when combined with radio frequency, you can expect superior results.

Who is RF microneedling suitable for?
Radio frequency microneedling is suitable for anyone with early signs of ageing, those who want to stimulate collagen and people with more severe skin problems like acne scarring, loose or sagging skin, sun damage, lines and wrinkles.

What is the procedure?
We will apply topical anaesthesia 15 mins before the procedure. The procedure itself should take around 30-45 mins for one area (e.g. face), after which we will apply a healing serum, followed by a protective cream or spray.

How long will the procedure last?
Depending on the area being treated, you can expect to be at the clinic for one and a half hours.

Is RF microneedling painful?
Yes there is discomfort with this procedure, however we use a strong anaesthetic cream to take the edge off, and recommend painkillers prior to the treatment – every little helps!

What happens after treatment?
We may apply a healing serum tailored to your skin, if appropriate. Your face will be red straight after. It usually remains a little red for a couple of days after treatment and we will advise you regarding skin care during this period. No makeup should be applied for 2-3 days. We may send you home with a supply of antibiotics and/or antiviral tablets if required, and home care products. You will be able to go back to work by Monday if the procedure is done on a Friday in most instances.

When will I see results from RF microneedling?
You will notice the results after two weeks. This healing process will continue over the next few months and you will see the results improve for up to 6-9 months after your treatment.

Do I need to repeat RF microneedling?
It will depend on your personal preferences and your goals. For example, for acne scarring, we generally recommend a repeat procedure at three months, but for general rejuvenation, once a year or six-monthly should suffice. Some like to come back for yearly maintenance for enhanced collagen regeneration and long-term benefits.

What are the long-term benefits and results?
The long-term benefits of RF microneedling include collagen regeneration and noticeable improvements in skin texture and plumpness. You will also see a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles, and any scarring.
