What are spider veins?

Spider veins, also known as thread veins, are extremely common. They are small, broken blood vessels that appear close to the surface of the skin. Whilst not typically harmful, they may appear in the form of thin branching lines and cause the appearance of red, ruddy skin, most commonly seen around the nose and cheek area.

This treatment is a fantastic alternative to laser treatment and is also suitable for those with broken capillaries, rosacea and drinker’s nose.

“Spider veins can have a lasting negative impact on self-confidence, but aren’t something that can be treated at home. The trouble with laser treatment is that it has a high chance of causing discolouration and has many associated risks. I chose to use ThermaVein technology in the clinic instead of lasers because it is incredibly precise, very safe, and has less risk of complications. Pigmentation risk is very low, and the healing is much quicker.”

What is ThermaVein?

dark blue pill

ThermaVein offers instant, safe, and precise results. Through a process called Thermocoagulation, ThermaVein uses a fine, blunt needle to apply radiofrequency ablation which converts to heat energy within the vessels and coagulates them. This seals the walls of the spider veins, causing them to disappear.

The process, unlike laser treatment, is suitable for all kinds of skin complexions and has a much lower risk of hyper-pigmentation although we always advise suncare post treatment.

Is it safe to remove spider veins?
Spider vein treatment is considered a safe procedure, as it is non-invasive and carried out by trained professionals.

Does getting spider veins removed hurt?
The process can be uncomfortable, especially around the nose, but it is tolerable.

Who can benefit from spider vein removal?
Spider vein removal can help if you suffer from unsightly thread veins, broken capillaries, rosacea or drinker’s nose. This is a very effective treatment that can help restore your confidence.

How long will the procedure last?
The spider vein removal procedure will last around 30 minutes, including your consultation time. Removing spider veins using ThermaVein is a ‘walk in, walk out’ procedure.

Do I need to repeat the treatment?
Depending on the size of the initial blood vessel, you may need to have a follow-up treatment, but we will advise you if this is required.

What happens immediately after treatment?
After treatment, you can continue with your day and apply your make-up as you wish, although you may experience some slight irritation, and there will be crusting over the first few days whilst the vessel is healing. Sun protection is recommended after treatment, although the ThermaVein treatment is very gentle compared to other systems on the market.

How long does ThermaVein take to heal?
You can expect recovery to take 3-4 weeks for areas on the body, but this time reduces to around 1-3 weeks for the face.

When will I see the results?
The removal of spider veins and an improvement in the appearance of your skin is instantly visible. This then crusts over as the skin heals. Most people will see results from 3 weeks onwards although this can vary in individual skin. Long-term results include a visible reduction in redness.

How much does it cost to get rid of spider veins?
Pricing will be dependent on the individual level of treatment required, as outlined below.

Are the results permanent?
For smaller vessels, results can be permanent. If the vessel is connected to a larger, deeper vessel, it may occasionally reperfuse the collapsed vessel. More commonly, new vessel formation may take place in a similar location to previous, treated vessels. As such, we generally find that after the first cycle of treatment, top-ups may be required anywhere from 6 monthly to 2 yearly.
